Formbold MCP Server

Ask your AI assistant to read your Formbold submissions and create forms for you. Setup takes one config block per client, and it works on every plan, Free included.

What can I ask my AI assistant to do with Formbold?

Once the Formbold MCP server is connected, your assistant can list your forms, read submissions and create new forms. You ask in plain language, in the editor or chat app you already use:

  • "Show the last 10 submissions for my Contact form."
  • "Did anyone from acme.com fill in the demo request form this week?"
  • "Create a contact form called Website Contact and give me the endpoint."

The last one is the time saver. In Cursor or Claude Code, the assistant creates the form, gets the endpoint and wires it into your code in the same conversation.

It works with VS Code (Copilot), Cursor, Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Codex. MCP access is included on every plan, including Free.

What do you need before you start?

You need two things:

  1. An API token. In the dashboard, open API & MCP in the sidebar, go to the API Tokens tab and create a token. Give it a name you'll recognise later, like "Cursor on work laptop". Copy it straight away.
  2. Node.js on your machine. The setup uses npx to run mcp-remote, a small bridge that connects your client to https://api.formbold.com/mcp.
Make one token per tool or per machine. If a laptop goes missing, you revoke that one token and everything else keeps working.

The MCP Server tab in the dashboard has a ready-made snippet for each client below. The snippets here are the same, so copy from whichever is closer. Replace YOUR_API_TOKEN with your token in every case.

How do I connect Cursor?

Open Cursor Settings, go to MCP, and add a new server. Or edit ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json in one project:

      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://api.formbold.com/mcp",
        "--header",
        "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_TOKEN"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Save the file. Formbold should show up in the MCP list with a green dot. If it stays red, restart Cursor once.

How do I connect VS Code?

VS Code reads MCP servers from .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace. Note the top-level key is servers, not mcpServers:

        "mcp-remote",
        "https://api.formbold.com/mcp",
        "--header",
        "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_TOKEN"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Open Copilot Chat in Agent mode and check the tools list. You should see the Formbold tools there.

How do I connect Claude Code?

Run one command in your terminal:

claude mcp add formbold -- npx -y mcp-remote https://api.formbold.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_TOKEN"

Then run claude mcp list. Formbold should be listed as connected.

How do I connect Claude Desktop?

Open Settings > Developer > Edit Config. That opens claude_desktop_config.json. Add Formbold under mcpServers:

        "-y",
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://api.formbold.com/mcp",
        "--header",
        "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_TOKEN"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Quit Claude Desktop completely and open it again. Closing the window isn't enough.

How do I connect Codex?

Codex keeps MCP servers in ~/.codex/config.toml:

~/.codex/config.toml
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
[mcp_servers.formbold]

args = [
  "-y",
  "mcp-remote",
  "https://api.formbold.com/mcp",
  "--header",
  "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_TOKEN"
]

Start a new Codex session so it picks up the change.

Which prompts work best?

Be specific about the form. "My forms" is vague when you have twelve. Name the form, the time range and what you want back:

  • "List my Formbold forms with their endpoints."
  • "Summarise yesterday's submissions to the Support form in three lines each."
  • "Find submissions to the Quote form that mention a budget over $5,000."
  • "Create a form for job applications, then add it to app/careers/page.tsx with name, email and a message field."

When you ask it to create a form, check the new form on All Forms before you ship. It takes ten seconds and catches a wrong name early.

How do I keep my token safe?

Treat the token like a password. It can read every submission your account can read.

  • Don't commit mcp.json or config.toml with a real token in it. If the file lives in a repo, add it to .gitignore.
  • Use a separate token for each client, so you can revoke one without breaking the others.
  • If you think a token leaked, revoke it on the API Tokens tab and create a new one. Revoking takes effect straight away.

Why isn't the Formbold MCP server connecting?

Most problems come down to three things.

A 401 or "Authentication token is required" error means the header is missing or the token is wrong. Check there's a space after Bearer and no stray quote marks.

"npx: command not found" means Node.js isn't installed, or your client can't see it. Install Node.js 18 or newer and restart the client.

Some clients split arguments on spaces, which can break the Authorization: Bearer ... header on Windows. If that happens, check your client's MCP docs for how it passes headers to mcp-remote.

For calling Formbold from your own code instead, see the REST API reference.
